Our Lady of Iron or Notre-Dame d'Iron, St Sulpice near Blois in the Dunois, France, July 6, 1631

  1. Notre-Dame d'Iron @ St Suplice in the Dunois
«Notre Dame d'Iron at St Sulpice, near Blois, in the Dunois, France. "It was in this chapel that, about the year 1631, a child, who had been smothered by struggling in its cradle, came to life the moment that its parents had dedicated it to Our Lady of Iron. (Archives of the Chapel.)"»

«The village of St Sulpice le Dunois is a small village located near the center of France. Home to Our Lady of Iron, it is situated near the larger town of Blois. It was in the chapel of this tiny village, in the year 1631, that our story takes place involving Our Lady of Iron. There was a young French couple living in the village at that time who felt themselves singularly blessed. Were they not fortunate? They took pleasure in their youth and enjoyed good health, had gainful employment, owned a modest home, and they had recently been blessed with a fine baby whom they felt was as sweet as the Babe of Bethlehem. Thus they mused on their way home together after early morning Mass one day. As soon as they entered their home, Peter hurried to the cradle to gaze lovingly at his infant son. The child must have been restless, he thought, as there was evidence that he had struggled with the bedclothes which were tossed about and tangled strangely about the infant. Peter reached in and lifted his son to hold him in his arms, only to find that the tiny figure was rigid and cold. Stunned, he called for his wife disbelieving, for it seemed their baby was dead! Peter's thoughts turned to Our Blessed Mother, and then to the statue of Our Lady D Iron at the parish church. They had spent many hours there in the past praying for her assistance, and her help had never failed them. They determined to take their baby there instantly! Surely, Mary would not fail them in this time of dire need. Together they entered the church, and sadly laid the lifeless form at the feet of the statue of Our Lady of Iron. As they began to pray for her intercession, they dedicated their baby to the Blessed Virgin Mary. In that very instant, the child who had been smothered by struggling in its cradle, cried out and came back to life. News of the miracle spread far and wide, and the fame of Our Lady of Iron was assured.»

  7. The Holy Martyrs of Nicomedia Saints Cyriaca or Dominica, martyred at Nicomedia in Bithynia, and Companions. She was born in Nicomedia to Greek parents Dorotheus and Eusebia (or Arsenia). They were devout Christians, wealthy but childless. Unceasing in prayer they obtained a child and since she was born on Sunday, the Lord's Day, she was given the name Cyriaca, the Greek word for Sunday, in Latin, Dominica. From her childhood, she consecrated herself to God. As she was a beautiful young woman, many suitors asked for her hand in marriage, but she refused them all saying that she wished to die as a virgin, as she had dedicated herself to Jesus Christ. A magistrate of Nicomedia also wished to betroth her to his son, especially since she came from a wealthy family, but when she once more rejected his proposal, he denounced her and her parents as Christians to Emperor Diocletian. Diocletian ordered the family to be arrested and upon their refusal to honour the pagan gods, Dorotheus was beaten until the soldiers grew tired and were unable to continue. Since torment had no effect, Diocletian exiled Dorotheus and Eusebia to Melitene in Western Armenia. Cyriaca was sent to Nicomedia to be interrogated by his son-in-law and co-ruler, Maximian, who promised her wealth and marriage to one of Diocletian's relatives if she worshiped the pagan gods. When she refused to renounce her faith, Maximian ordered that she be whipped. The soldiers who assumed the flogging had to be replaced three times as they eventually became tired. Since Maximian failed to persuade the young woman to change her faith, he sent her to Hilarion, the eparch of Bithynia in Chalcedon, either to convert Cyriaca to paganism, or send her back to him. Hilarion tried his best to achieve his goal, including promises and threats, but when all these proved ineffective, he ordered her tortured. Cyriaca was suspended by her hair for several hours, while soldiers burned her body with torches. She was finally taken down and thrown into a prison cell. During the night, Jesus Christ appeared to her and healed her wounds. Seeing the miraculous salvation of Cyriaca, many pagans converted to Christianity, but they were all beheaded. The next day, Hilarion announced that the gods had healed her of pity and urged her to go to the temple and give thanks to them. When she was brought to the pagan temple, Cyriaca prayed that God would destroy the idols and a sudden earthquake toppled the idols and shattered them to pieces. Hilarion blasphemed God and then he was struck by lightning and died on the spot. Cyriaca was tortured again by Apollonius, the successor of Hilarion. She was thrown into a fire, but the flames were extinguished, and then to wild beasts, but they became tame and gentle. Apollonius then sentenced her to death by the sword. As she was given a little time to pray, she asked God to receive her soul and to remember those who honoured her martyrdom. Upon completing her prayer, she rendered her soul to God before the sword was lowered on her head. Pious Christians took her relics and buried them. At the time of her death, she was 21 years old. Her body is kept with great veneration at Tropea in Calabria. (RM).
