In fact it is the oldest among these. From the moment that she received the angel's greeting and gave her consent to God's invitation to become the mother of the Word made flesh, Mary became the bearer of Grace in this world. This title of 'Our Lady of Grace' is the oldest with which the Order has shown veneration to Mary. The General Chapter of 1284 prescribed the daily recitation or chant of the 'Benedicta Tu' precisely in honour of Our Lady of Grace. The antiphon 'Ave Regina Caelorum', also dating back to the 13th Century, is in honour of this same title as well. A confraternity with the title 'Lady of Grace' was established at least as early as 1401 in Augustinian friaries of Spain and Portugal and, over the subsequent one hundred years, had extended widely throughout the Order. New friaries under this title began to be established in Italy and Latin America. In 1807 Pope Pius VII, at the request of Venerable Joseph Menochio, Papal Sacristan and Confessor to the Pope, granted the Order the right to celebrate this Feast on 1 June (or 9 June in some places). The Virgin Mary, greeted by the angel as 'full of grace' became, from that moment, the Mother of Grace. As Mother of the one and only Mediator Jesus, she is Mother of the Author of Grace and dispenser of Grace.» June 9: Our Lady of Grace of Mentorella «High up in the Sabine Mountains of Italy, about 35 miles from Rome, stands an ancient and venerable Shrine of our Lady under the title of Our Lady of Mentorella, Mother of Grace. To Italian peasants who dwell in the surrounding country the place upon which the shrine stands is simply known as Mentorella. The place and Shrine of Mentorella are considered sacred because as a tradition tells us at the great cliff just behind the shrine, the miraculous conversion of Placid, an officer in the army of Trajan, who was later to be called St Eustace, took place. He there beheld, it is said, Our Lord crucified between the antlers of a great stag, which as a huntsman he had pursued. The Shrine of Our Lady of Mentorello, Mother of Grace, was built about a thousand years ago though various objects of religion contained therein are much older. The statue of Our Lady encased in glass and placed upon the marble baldachino of the main altar, dates back at least to the twelfth century. Mentorella's greatest claim to renown lies in the fact that the shrine is a place of pilgrimage and of special devotion to the Blessed Mother of God. The original church was built by Constantine and consecrated by Pope St Sylvester. Tradition has it that St. Benedict lived for some time before he founded the famous monastery of Subiaco, in a cave immediately behind the Mentorella church.» June 9: Our Lady of Ligny «Our Lady of Ligny, near Bar le Duc, in Lorraine. This image is very famous for the frequent miracles which are wrought there. Ligny-en-Barrois is a French town with a population of about 5,000 located in north-eastern France. Each year the town celebrates its patron saint, Our Lady of Virtues, on the 5th Sunday after Easter. The portrait of the Blessed Virgin has been at Ligny since 1459, and the year 2009 marked its 550th anniversary. The history of the painting of Our Lady of Virtues, or Our Lady of Ligny, and the town of Ligny-en-Barrois, are closely interlinked. The portrait is a silk painting unlike any other portrait of the Blessed Virgin. It was originally known to be in the possession of Pope Urban IV, but after many wanderings, the pious image was given to the canons of the collegiate church of Ligny in the year 1459 by Anthony de la Salle, the tutor of the son of Count Louis I of Luxembourg. During the war between Francis I and Charles V, the Count Anthony of Luxembourg was allied to the King of France. Ligny was besieged, stormed and destroyed on June 29, 1544. The Holy Image of Our Lady of Ligny was stolen by an Imperial trooper, (actually a German mercenary), but it was retrieved by a laborer and returned in grand procession in 1581. This procession was led by the Countess Margaret of Savoy, who built a new monastery for the Capuchins over the ruins of the previous site. She also began the devotion to the portrait known as Our Lady of Virtues. During the French Revolution Church property was confiscated as at every other place. The church at Ligny was sold in 1791 and then destroyed. During the Terror, however, the painting was hidden by two councilors. The painting was restored to its proper place when the revolution died down. In 1814, during the “Campaign of France,” the town of Ligny was again besieged. A thousand young soldiers defended the town against odds of ten to one. Their bravery did not stop the town from being taken and eventually looted, but at least the homes were not destroyed despite the best efforts of the Prussian artillerymen. In a statement attributed to Canon Souhaut, it is recorded that: "The protection of the sky over the city seemed indisputable so that even the Prussians attributed the futility of their efforts to set artillery fire to the town to the miraculous image of Our Lady of Ligny." This protection seemed to continue through World War I, as, according to some, Our Lady of Virtues protected the city through four separate bombings that caused no deaths.» June 9: Our Lady of the Walnut, no information available June 9: Our Lady of Fontenuova «In Monsummano Terme, in the province of Pistoia, in the swamps that were drained in the 1500s, at a place called "Pozzo vecchio" or "Renatico" there is painted a devout image of Mother Mary holding Baby Jesus on her knees, surrounded by four saints, commonly recognized as Saints Nicholas, Mark, Sebastian and Roque, or Saints Anthony the Great, Vitus, Sebastian and Julian the Hospitaler. The fresco is traced back to the 14th century, that is between 1327 and 1348, connected to the great plague described by Boccaccio, but more likely it is the work of a painter of the 1500s, a good connoisseur of anatomy. At the foot of this Image the peasants pause in prayer as they go down to the plain for their work, and in the evening before going back to the hill town. On June 9, 1573 AD, a shepherdess, Jacobina Mariotti, stopped to pray in front of the image of the Madonna, as she usually does every day, and forgets to watch over the flock. When she gets up to go home, she no longer finds her sheep; crying, she returns to Mary's feet and confidently asks to be able to find them again. Raising her eyes full of tears, Jacobina sees the Image come to life: Our Lady moves her eyes and extending her arm indicates to her where the flock has gathered. Our Lady also asks her to go to the castle and tell the rector of the Church of San Nicholas to build a church at this site. The news of the apparition spread quickly, the devotees flocked from all over, so much so that the municipal and religious authorities decided to build a small chapel on the site. Fr Simon Casciani, who was soon after the rector of St Nicholas, wrote in his diary, that at the same site, the next day, June 10, 1573 AD, a young girl heard the cries of a child come from the image. On Monday, June 10, 1602, it was observed that the image of Our Lady wept tears and Baby Jesus wailed, this incident seems to be associated with Peter Fanciullaci's actions that day. Peter Fanciullacci, steward of the Grand Duke of Tuscany, passed on horseback in front of the tabernacle, seeing people gathered in prayer, he began to mock them, soon after, he was struck by sudden blindness. He then repented of his incredulity, returned to the image of the Madonna and begged her for forgiveness and to be healed, the mother of God restored his sight. A life of great devotion to Mary began for Fanciullacci, which he also expressed through an industrious collaboration for the construction of the sanctuary. The summer of 1602 was very hot, it hadn't rained for months and the land was dry. On the morning of July 7, 1602 AD, in front of the image of the Madonna, while Fr Simon Casciani was celebrating Mass, suddenly a spring of water gushed from the ground, about twenty meters away from the site of the miraculous image of Our Lady. The water was very good, fresh and clear: the priests and those present drank it immediately and word spread quickly. It is from this event that the image of Mary was later called Our Lady of the New Fountain. Since then, the site came to be called the New Fountain or Fontenuova, and the chapel as Our Lady of Fontenuova or Madonna della Fonte Nuova. On August 25, 1782 AD, the image was solemnly crowned with a precious crown already given in 1608 AD by Duke Cosimo II de Medici.
