The Miracle of Our Lady of Lapa or Nossa Senhora da Lapa or Our Lady of the Grotto, Sernancelhe, Portugal, June 10, 1498 AD. «In 1498, a mute girl Joana was herding her flock in the hills of Quintela, outside the town of Sernancelhe in north central Portugal, when she found a statue of the Virgin and Child in the cleft of a rock. Young Joana made the statue an object of personal devotion, carrying it back and forth from home, where she made clothes for it, to the hills, where she would set it on a rock, surround it with flowers and pray, while the sheep grazed nearby. Her mother began to feel the "doll" was distracting the girl from her chores and one day threw it in the fireplace. Suddenly Joana spoke, for the first time in her life: "Mother! That's Our Lady of the Grotto! What are you doing?" The girl grabbed the unburnt image out of the fire. She was cured but her mother's arm became paralysed! But three times, the image vanished from the Church, reappearing in its original place between the rocks. So, a Chapel was built there, enclosing the location where Joana found the statue. People believed that in 982 AD, nuns fleeing the Muslim Infidel invader Almanzor, had hidden the image there. Nossa Senhora da Lapa became one of Portugal's major pilgrimage destinations, attracting devotion from Brazil and India. In 1575 AD, Pope Gregory XIII approved the request of King Sebastian to transfer the Shrine to the custody of the Society of Jesus. Between 1610 and 1635 AD, the Jesuits rebuilt the Church, decorating the interior with azulejo tilework. Later, they added a college and housing for pilgrims, students and themselves. From the 1700s to the 1900s, the complex changed hands several times, repeatedly taken over by the state then returned to the Church. Since 1929, it has belonged to the Diocese of Lamego. In addition to the huge boulders within the Sanctuary, another unusual feature of the Shrine is a crocodile hanging from the ceiling, as in the Church of Our Lady of the Cherry Tree in Belgium, a wooden replica of the long-decayed stuffed skin, which some say a pilgrim brought to thank the Virgin for her help against the beast in the Indies.» June 10: Our Lady of Cranganore «In the East Indies stands the church and the shrine of Our Lady of Cranganore, which it is asserted was built by one of the three Kings who visited the Divine Child and His Blessed Mother. India was one of the countries that had the privilege of receiving the light of Faith at the dawn of Christianity. History relates that St Thomas the Apostle came to India at Cranganor in 52 AD. There the Christians are still known as St Thomas Christians. The Christians of Kerala were dependent on the Church of Mesopotamia, which had betrayed Christianity to make peace with the Zoroastrians, and had adopted the heresy of Nestorius. The Kerala Christians were also hard pressed by both the Hindus and the Muslims. They accepted a subordinate position in the Hindu caste system, which is not compatible with Christianity. Remnants of the Christians in other parts of the East Indies were wiped out by the Muslim Infidels by terror and other means. It is believed that when St Thomas came to Cranganor, he brought with him a picture of Our Lady, painted by St Luke, this was lost after St Thomas' martyrdom, but later discovered in his cave at the Little Mount at Mylapore near Madras, the scene of his death. In 1498 AD when the Portuguese arrived in Cranganore, they were surprised to find so many churches dedicated to Mary. St Francis Xavier found the people of Cranganor very strong in faith and devoted to Mary, and he spared no pains to inflame their devotion to the Mother of God. He also found a confraternity of the Blessed Virgin Mary already established and he fostered this zealously during his lifetime. When the Portuguese came to Kerala, the Christian royal family had died out, and, oppressed and dissatisfied with their condition under the dominant Hindus and Muslims, they sent this regalia to the Portuguese with a plea for help and to take them under protection. Under the saintly Alexius de Menezes, the Portuguese worked hard to purge the St Thomas Christians of the taint of Nestorianism and win them to the true Church. About a century later, the Dutch Protestants, Satanists, fighting the King of Spain who happened then to be also the King of Portugal, invaded Kerala, and instituted a severe persecution of Christians. Christians who had been Hindus, Buddhists and Muslims before the arrival of the Portuguese were pressured to revert to Hinduism, Buddhism and Mahomettanism, while the Dutch pressured the St Thomas Christians to revert to Nestorianism. As the Nestorian Church in Mesopotamia itself had largely come into the sphere of the Portuguese, as a substitute, the Kerala Christians were encouraged to accede to the Jacobite heresy. Instigated by the Dutch Satanists, some malefactors amongst the Kerala Christians pretended to grievances against the True Church and staging under Dutch auspices what they call the "Oath at the Broken Cross," vowed to secede from the True Church.
