1. Our Lady of Reparation of Pietranico in Pescara, Abruzzi, Italy

   On March 25, 1613 , the day of the Annunciation, a farmer named Domenico del Biondo was walking through the cross quarter of Pietranico on his way to inspect his crops, when a woman in a starry white dress appeared to him. She identified herself as the Queen of Heaven, asked for the restoration of a shrine. In March 1675, a marauding horde of military deserters sacked the city. When they threatened to return that spring, citizens prayed to Our Lady of the Cross, and on May 2 she declared that the city was spared. Pietranico celebrates the Madonna of the Cross on May 3 , the Catholic feast of the Holy Cross, which was probably the patronal feast of the Quartiere della Croce before the apparition. The night before, May 2, people light hundreds of bonfires in and around the city, so that the whole area appears to be on fire as the 1600 Madonna statue parades through it. On May 3 the statue goes in procession from the parish church to the rural oratory. At first glance, the church of Pietranico looks like a simple rural building used for worship. To the visitor who crosses the threshold of the Oratory for the first time, an interior is presented so rich that he certainly could never have imagined it hidden behind that simple facade just described. Inside, you can admire stuccos and gilding, friezes and decorations, fake marbles, canvases, paintings.
